Instructions for Bio 441 labs March 26 and 27

We will do the computer lab exercise this week (March 26 and 27).

Thanks to Shane Wingler, a student in this class, we now have instructions that should enable nearly all students to run the program. All that's needed is to install Java 7 if you don't have it already (this is quick, easy and free) and then tell your computer that it's OK to run this particular program. These instructions should work for Mac OS 10.7.3 and above, and for Windows 7, 8, Vista and XP. (They will not work for Mac OS 10.6)

Start by going to this page and follow the instructions to find the Java Control Panel on your computer.

On the control panel, click on the Security tab, and then choose Edit Site List. Enter the URL for the program, which is

http://labs.bio.unc.edu/harris/Courses/CellAutomata.html

If you don't see the Java Control Panel as indicated in the instructions, then you will need to download and install Java and then return to the previous page to set your security permissions to run the program.

Once you have the permissions set, go to the program to see if it works.

Wait a few moments for the program to load. You should then see a grey background with a blue menu bar on the left, with pull-down menus numbered from 0 to 8, each giving the options of Filled, Blank, Same, or Opposite. If so, now click your cursor in the middle of the screen. You should get a small light blue-green square every time you click it. Try changing some of the settings from "Filled" to "Blank" or "Same" and then click Play. The program should run. Depending on your settings, you may see something like the (video we prepared) or perhaps a very different pattern. That's the idea: a simple change in the rules can make a big change in the output.

You can read more about this program here.

Please let us know if it's still not working for you.

AND PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR COMPUTER TO YOUR LAB SESSION!
